Lesson 8: Find Hidden Search Results
In some regions (particularly European countries), Google may filter or remove certain search results due to privacy regulations. This can limit the number of results you see. There are two main ways to bypass this and access more complete results.
Solution 1: Using a VPN with a Dedicated US IP
Connect to a VPN server in the United States to get a US-based IP address. This often allows access to unfiltered Google results.
Challenge: Google detects most shared VPN IPs and prompts you to solve a CAPTCHA. The most reliable workaround is to purchase a dedicated (static) IP address from a VPN provider in the US.
Example:
After switching to a US IP:
- Google may initially show a CAPTCHA (solve it once).
- Searching for a name (e.g., "sad sarraj") returned 4,050 results — significantly more than from a European IP.
- Scrolling through results no longer shows restriction messages.
Solution 2: Using the SquareX Browser Extension (Disposable Browser)
SquareX provides a "disposable browser" feature that routes your browsing through a cloud-hosted server in your chosen location — without needing a traditional VPN.
Steps to set up:
- Go to the SquareX extension link (provided in the lecture resources).
- Click Add to Chrome → Add extension.
- Pin the extension to your browser toolbar for easy access.
- Click the SquareX icon → Get Started.
- Sign in or create an account (supports Google, Twitter/X, or Microsoft login).
- Once logged in, go to Disposable Browser.
- Select a region (e.g., US East) and click Start.
This opens a new tab connected to a cloud Linux server with a clean US-based session (typically 10-minute sessions with high-speed connection).
Example result:
Searching for "sad sarraj" in the disposable browser returned the same expanded results (no restriction message visible when scrolling).
Both methods work effectively:
- VPN + dedicated IP: More permanent but may require solving a CAPTCHA initially.
- SquareX disposable browser: Quick, no VPN needed, ideal for short sessions.
Choose the approach that best fits your workflow.
